Named after John Smeaton - the brilliant English civil engineer who also designed the legendary Eddystone Lighthouse - the pier was completed in the 1890s to protect St Ives Harbour Beach from the full force of the Atlantic Ocean. More than a century later it still stands, immovable and magnificent, doing exactly what it was built to do.

In winter, when storms roll in from the Atlantic, the pier becomes a part of one of Cornwall's most impressive spectacles as the waves thunder along its outer wall and barrel into Lambeth walk beyond, creating waves that break across the rooftops.
